• Joe Hottinger records riffs on his phone, then names them something so he can figure out what's what. The Halestorm guitarist recalled to Louder Sound that he came up with this tune upstairs at home "with a bunch of dumb rock'n'roll skull things laying around, and I thought, 'Skulls! That will do!'"
  
  He played the riff to Halestorm frontwoman Lzzy Hale, who was immediately inspired and started writing melodies and lyrics. They ended up with "lines about not being just another empty skull, and not being a dummy."
• Hottinger explained that despite everything that's going on in the world today, this is not a political song. He said: "We don't really talk about politics too much because it's so divisive, and I don't want to be a part of that division. That division is the enemy, and that's the idea of the song: don't be divisive. I don't care what country you're in, there's a threat of evil happening, and it's trying to disrupt the peace and the way of life we all currently have."
