Songfacts®:

  • Much of Fine Line was inspired by Harry Styles' year-long romance with French model Camille Rowe. During this dreamy piano ballad, he hints that his infidelity was the reason it ended in July 2018.

I'm in my bed, and you're not here
And there's no one to blame but the drink and my wandering hands

Harry is full of regret that his fall from grace has caused the breakup.
  • Harry was really cut up about the breakup, and at times felt sadder than he'd ever felt before in his life. This song is about falling back into one of those low moments.

What am I now? What am I now?
What if you're someone I just want around?
I'm falling again, I'm falling again, I'm fallin'

Harry explained to Apple Music that he "had started to feel myself becoming someone I didn't want to be, and that was really hard."
  • Harry wrote the song with Florence + The Machine/Jessie Ware collaborator Tom "Kid Harpoon" Hull. The former One Direction star recalled to Zane Lowe that the night they wrote it, he was showering and Kid Harpoon was playing the piano and singing the "dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun" chorus. He stepped out of the shower, stood next to him in a towel, then they wrote the whole thing in around 20 minutes.
  • Harry Styles performed the song for the first time on February 18, 2020 at the Brit Awards.
  • The water-soaked Dave Meyers-directed video starts with Harry Styles lamenting a failed relationship. The singer starts to perform the song on a grand piano and as he hits the keys, floods of water seep from the instrument. Eventually, the whole ornate room is submerged and Harry drowns in his heartbroken emotions.

Styles previously collaborated with Meyers for his "Adore You" visual.
  • BTS' Jungkook released a solo cover on YouTube on October 28, 2021.
