Songfacts®:

  • Lead vocals on this track are shared by David Hawkins and Gary Louris. Hawkins told Songfacts about the track: "This song is inspired by being in one place too long and needing to get some miles between you and everything in your life. We've all been there; when you need a hard reset and only the road will do it.

It came from a personal experience, but it's akin to the vibe of Kerouac's On The Road; the road itch those guys felt that we can all relate to. That feeling Sal has when he feels the road pulling him, and the sense of freedom they feel when Dean is driving over those mountain passes at top speed? That feeling is what this song is about."
