Songfacts®:

  • Here, Hayley Williams reminisces about a former lover/close friend, pondering why they decided to finish their relationship.

    And now I
    Can't seem to remember why
    We ever
Felt we had to say goodbye

Williams is aware that her emotional instability contributed to the end of their union.

I just wanna talk about it
    Sorry for freakin' out

She would like to fix the broken pieces of love.
  • Williams penned "Why We Ever" with Nashville songwriter Micah Tawlks. At the time of their session, Williams was feeling depressed and she acknowledges her "sadness shows" in the lyrics. However, the process of writing the song and disburdening herself had a positive effect. "Now I look back and credit this night as being the beginning of a new season of my life, where I hold myself accountable for learning to love better," Williams said. "I've let myself down a lot in love. This was the start of recognizing bad patterns and acknowledging that I'm ready to grow out of them."
