Songfacts®:

  • Heart get bluesy on "Down On Me," a track from their fourth album, Bébé le Strange. It finds lead singer Ann Wilson in thrall with a guy who doesn't appreciate her. She can't resist him, even though he only brings her down. It's not a song that was ever destined to be a hit, but it's one of Ann's favorites. "I always liked 'Down On Me,' she told Songfacts. "It's a great blues song."
  • Like most songs on the Bébé le Strange album, this one was written by Heart leaders Ann and Nancy Wilson along with their friend Sue Ennis, who often assisted with their songwriting. The album was Heart's first without guitarist Roger Fisher, who was booted from the band. The lead guitar is played by Howard Leese, a multi-instrumentalist in the group that picked up much of the slack in Fisher's absence. Nancy Wilson played rhythm guitar and Mellotron on the track.
