Songfacts®:

  • This song originally appeared on Whirlygig, the 1997 album by Nancy and Ann Wilson's side project the Lovemongers. Nancy Wilson explained to Billboard magazine that it was producer Ben Mink who encouraged them to re-record the tune for the record. "Back then we didn't have a good budget to produce anything that sounded very good," Wilson said. "But ('Sand') is one of those songs that just kept coming back and coming back. Ben saw us do it live and pointed out that we might want to bring that song on."
  • Nancy Wilson explained the song: "It's a tough one to get through because it sums up the arc of a love affair, or the arc of a life or the end of a season. It's a simple concept big enough to imprint heavily in your life - the idea that time runs out."
