Songfacts®:

  • Produced by Paul Otten and written by the classically trained Helen Austin, the lightly produced "Colour It" runs to just under 3 minutes, and, performed by Austin, won the Song Of The Year for 2013 in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. The song is also the title track of Austin's award winning children's album in the 2014 Canadian Juno Awards. >>>

  • Austin told us the story behind the song: "I was writing my second kids album in 2012 when I wanted to write a song about how we are all different and it's those differences that make us special and unique. I usually produced my own music but felt that this song needed something extra so I asked Paul Otten, who I had met at a songwriting conference, if he would be interested in producing it. It was this production that led me to ask him to produce and few more for the album which went onto win a JUNO.

The song 'Colour It' was the catalyst that led me to Paul and now we have been in a duo together ever since called Big Little Lions. This song changed my life because now I get to do what I always dreamed of doing... to be in a band, making music that I love with a wonderful music partner."
