Songfacts®:

  • Born Gabriella "Gabi" Wilson, the singer from Vallejo, California is better known by her stage name H.E.R. (acronym for "Having Everything Revealed"). For a long time the identity of H.E.R. was unknown as she preferred to remain anonymous and only be represented by her music.
  • H.E.R. penned "As I Am" in Miami for her I Used to Know H.E.R.: The Prelude EP. As soon as she stepped into the studio she heard her producers SoundzFire, Jeff Gitelman, Flippa and Elijah Diaz playing a track with the sample from Stetsasonic's 1986 cut "Go Stetsa I." Their instrumentation inspired her to come up with something happier and more loving theme as opposed to her more usual fierce lyrics.
  • The song finds H.E.R. embracing her love for her partner and she asks for a reassurance that he feels the same way and they will stay together forever.

I don't want no one else
So we should be chillin' back
    Ain't nothin' wrong with that
So tell me that, tell me that

"I'm really about this women empowerment thing," H.E.R. told Billboard. "And I wanted to make a really empowering, fun song. Something that everybody could just feel good, that can make everybody feel good, and everybody could dance to."
