Songfacts®:

  • This song was the last song to be recorded for this album, and it was written on the spot in the studio, by Ville Valo, the singer in HIM. The band didn't intend for this song to be on the album, but as HIM's bass player Mikko Paananen said: "We gotta have this song on the album, or else we're f--ked." This song was also the first single from the Love Metal album, and the first video. The single reached #1 in their home country of Finland. >>

  • When we spoke with Ville Valo in 2013, the HIM singer/songwriter explained: "That wasn't originally supposed to be included on Love Metal, the album. I had the main ideas for it, but we kind of ran out of time. We already had recorded the rest of the songs, but then I had this "eureka" moment and finished up the song really quickly right at the very last week of recording the album. Everybody liked it so much that we had to reserve some more time from the studio and really work on that song.

As a band, especially a rock band, when you think in terms of albums more than songs, you tend to put all your effort into the X amount of songs. Once all that stuff is out of your system - meaning recorded and produced - then all of a sudden you feel a breath of fresh air, this sense of relief. And that time is really, really good for getting new stuff done. We've had that in the past with a few songs. We have a song called 'Gone With the Sin' on Razorblade Romance that happened exactly the same way."

  • Joe from Westville, IlTheir first band name was His Infernal Majesty. The band changed the name to HIM from the "Wicked Game" single onwards, though the single for "Your Sweet Six Six Six" includes a 'His Infernal Majesty' sticker.

Their second major US release, Razorblade Romance, was released under the name HER because a Chicago based post-rock band named HiM held the trademark on the name. While they toured Europe, primarily Germany, at this time, they used the name HIM and HER. HIM eventually bought the rights to the name "HIM" in the United States and used it worldwide from there on. HIM has also had other names like Black Salem, Thulsa doom back in 2000-2002, when as stated above the band had problems with the name in USA. Those names have been used in several gigs, mostly in Finland,in HIM's native country.

In the official HIM biography, Synnin Viemää, Ville Valo admitted to making things up and joking about the name during interviews, leading to conflicting accounts of the origin of the name and the confusion that exists today. During an interview, Valo has said:

In almost every interview someone asks what does HIM stand for. I can't even remember our latest lie about that. When Hanson was hot, we said it means Hanson Is Murder. The name doesn't have a particular history. His Infernal Majesty was a totally different band. I think HIM derives from some death metal joke. And it was our protest to Haile Selassie's rastafarian religion, he used to be called His Imperial Majesty. But nowadays because of Linde's hair, we actually might be supporting him.

and that is stated by interviews with the band and band members themselves
  • Brandon from Madera, CaThis song is about how when you love some one
but then it dies and is cruel and sad.
"when angels cry blood" would maybe mean
when something so pure like an angel has something so deep
to let out like blood .
"on flowers of evil in bloom" can be interperated the same way
something so pure and beatiful can have some evil deep inside when it blooms.

another part of the song is depressing
"when love is a gun seperating me from you"
well once it dies you want it all to die. including your life.
cuz without that one love you have nothing.
  • Anne-marie from Memphis, TnIf you've seen the video, the sight of Ville Valo walking across the frozen countryside portrays the stillness of the song, the death like stillness of a love that is no more. And yet the coldness of a forbidding land that will not be travelled again.
  • Mick from Rome, NyIf HIM doesnt intentionally stand for His Infernal Majesty, then why, when i put a disk into my comp, does the Artist come up as "H.I.M. (His Infernal Majesty)" automatically? a.k.a. its somehow embedded into the CD's Media Info or something
  • Mary from Volos, GreeceI like this song pretty much.Ville sings it so it can be nothing less than aweresome...
  • Whatever from Halden, NorwayHis infernal majesty was a joke guys.... read about it... about the song: This song is the best song ever made. read the lyrics multiple times and you will get it:)
  • Wajahat from Euless, Txactually His infernal majesty was a completely different band all together that ville was a part of HIM is just the name of the band now. but he doesn't care what ppl think or say it stands for so...
  • Victoria from San Fransisco, Caactually, i read that the name "his infernal majesty" wasx a joke, and the band didnt intend on actually using it. HIM does not stand for his internal majesty, and isnt spelled H.I.M. its just HIM.
  • Adam from Waterloo, CanadaHIM does not stand for His Infernal Majesty, nor has it ever. Its always just been HIM. In an interview with Ville he talked about how he enjoyed making up different lies about what it meant.
  • Hannah from Uk, Englandyou'r all wrong dimwitts!!!! it was actually inspired by ville valo's grandmothers death
  • Jesse from Detroit, MiActually HIM does stand for His Infernal Majesty because Ville Valo says so in his interview on their dvd entitled "Love Metal Archives: The Music Video Collection From 1997-2003"
  • Tiana from Perth, AustraliaContrary to the above 'fact' in the red HIM doesn't stand for anything. The band was originally called His Infernal Majesty but changed it to HIM when they realised the satanic implications. In an interview with the ever sexy Ville Valo he even said that it didn't stand for anything.
  • Miss Spookiness from Saarbrücken, Germanyhim is not emo him is love metal and not everyone who cuts his wrist is emo .... thanx ...
  • Haley from Los Angeles, CaThis song is about how love can be so crushing and how it can just kill your heart. Its so true!
  • Dan from Santa Clarita, Cabasically, love will rip your heart out
  • Amore from Chicago, IlI really like this song it was the first song of HIM's that I really got into.
  • Melissa from Casper, WyThis song is a great one! About how love can hurt and turn into the funeral of hearts in the end. This song tells about how someone can come into your life and change all your hopes and dreams, but you'll love them anyway, they can also cause you pain and hurt in the end though. I think this may be one of the messages in this song. Again another Hit by the great band, HIM.
  • Ryan from El Paso, Txthis song is primarily about being driven to the brink of insanity by anothers love. Love is the funeral of hearts. Also about Valo's ex-girlfriend. His love for her was the funeral of his heart.
  • Amber from Birmingham, Alanother great song by HIM
