Songfacts®:

  • "That You Are" is a tender ballad written and recorded by Hozier with the Syrian American musician Bedouine. The song explores themes of longing, devotion, and the intricate dance of human connection.
  • "That You Are" is a track from Unaired, the second of two EPs Hozier released in 2024. These EPs feature songs that didn't make it onto his third album, Unreal Unearth, a record inspired by Dante Alighieri's 14th century epic poem Inferno. This tune, carried by soul-stirring violins, delves into Dante's deep infatuation with his muse, Beatrice - a woman he met only a few times but whose memory he cherished for life, leading to the creation of poems in her honor. Another Unaired track, "July," also reflects this reverential theme.

"Something that I had hoped that the songs could play with and reflect is - when bringing it back to Dante's Inferno - all of these ghosts that this character meets," Hozier noted to Rolling Stone. "Every chapter is a different character voicing their pain, their suffering, whatever it is. They're speaking to him about the life that they lived."
  • Bedouine's go-to producer Gus Seyffert produced the track. The Los Angeles-based producer/musician has also worked with Adele, Lana Del Rey and Michelle Branch.
