  • The third single from Hunter Hayes' eponymous debut album was penned by the singer with Nashville songwriters Andrew Dorff (Martina McBride's "Ride," Lee Brice's "These Last Few Days") and Luke Laird (Carrie Underwood's "Temporary Home," Miranda Lambert's "Baggage Claim"). "It's one of those songs that speaks to where I am in life," Hunter told The Boot. "Hey, if you're gonna be somebody's heartache, be mine. It's a fun song, I love singing it. What's really cool is that it is musically representative of a lot of stuff I've been checking out lately."
  • Hayes explained the song's meaning to CBS News: "Some chances are worth taking. Knowing that the outcome far outweighs the risks, that's what 'Somebody's Heartbreak' is about," he said. "This could very well fail and that's fine, but if it's going to fail I might as well say that it failed trying because it's definitely worth trying."
  • The song's music video provides an insight into life on the road for Hunter Hayes. The clip was filmed at the Minneapolis venue of Carrie Underwood's Blown Away tour, which Hunter opened.
  • The song was inspired by a girl that Hunter was attracted to whom he suspected didn't feel the same way about him. "It's funny because it was the night before Valentine's Day and I was trying to think of a cool, clever way to twist the 'be mine' thing," he told The Boot. "But at the same time I was thinking, 'Here's this girl that I like. In the back of my mind I know that I'm probably not the guys that she would want to be with. So if we were able to spend time together, she'd probably get bored hanging around with me for too long.' So it was kind of like, 'I know you're going to leave.' I knew she was interested in somebody else but ... if I could just have one moment, it was exactly that. 'If you're gonna be somebody's heartbreak, I'm here. Just sayin', waving my hand, be mine.'"
