Songfacts®:

  • Norman 'Hurricane' Smith worked as an engineer on all the Beatles' sessions between 1962 and 1965. This song was written when John Lennon joked that the Beatles were short of a song while recording the soundtrack for Help! and Smith hoped it would fill the gap. His contribution was initially accepted until Ringo picked Johnny Russell's "Act Naturally," a country hit for Buck Owens in 1963.
