Songfacts®:

  • This dirge-like song was written by singer Joe Talbot about his daughter June, who was stillborn. Here, he addresses the traumatic experience.
  • Talbot told Kerrang this is the Idles song of which he is most proud. "It was something I needed to do," he said. "It was hard, because I thought people would judge me. My partner encouraged me to feel safe and do it. I feel like I've done something worthy in my career; it felt like I did something right."
  • This is the only Idles song where Talbot has written the lyrics first. He struggled to see where it would fit on Joy As An Act Of Resistance because it was so personal, but after hearing the riff Idles guitarist Lee Kiernan came up with, he realized he wanted to share his pain with the world.

Talbot explained to NPR: "I wanted to illuminate the importance of grieving parents' right to call themselves mothers and fathers."
  • Though the heart-rending song was written for Talbot's stillborn first child, it somehow evinces hope. "I've always been an optimist," Talbot told Mojo magazine. "And I think if you'd been in my shoes, you see that optimism was one of the things that me through. That, and me and my wife looking after each other."
