Songfacts®:

  • Iggy Pop had many women in his life, but one made a particular impression on him. Not much is known about Johanna, but she inspired much of the 1973 Stooges album Raw Power, particularly the track "Gimme Danger." Speaking with NME in 1975, Pop described her as a beautiful girl who "just destroyed me."
  • Pop and guitarist James Williamson wrote and recorded most of the Kill City album in 1975, a year after their group, The Stooges, broke up. The album wasn't completed and released until 1977, when Iggy's solo success convinced the Bomp! label to fund it and release it.
