Songfacts®:

  • After separating from English rockabilly guitarist Darrel Higham, her husband of 13 years, Imelda May fell in love with someone else. She wrote this song about the agony of waiting for the phone to ring at the start of a relationship.

    Call, call, call, call me
You've taken all the time you need
If our love, if our love, if our love, means anything
Baby please call, call, call, call me

Speaking about the song to the Daily Mail's You magazine, May said: "It's something everyone has been through. You're lucky if you haven't."
  • May released "Call Me" as the lead single from Life Love Flesh Blood on November 18, 2016. She said the record covers the whole gamut of emotions after breaking up with her husband and embarking on a new relationship. "It's about falling in love after a big split, being scared and feeling lust again," she explained. "And then I got my heart broken by that person and so I wrote about that, too."
  • Darrel Higham had been a member of May's band on her first four albums but didn't contribute to Life Love Flesh Blood. For her fifth record, the Irish singer stepped away from her rockabilly sound and adopted soft rock and acoustic styles in collaboration with producer T Bone Burnett.
  • May also recorded a remix of the song with the English singer-songwriter Jack Savoretti. Regular George Ezra collaborator Cam Blackwood produced that version.
