Songfacts®:

  • Frontman Brandon Boyd said on his record label's website that like Incubus' best "rock out" tracks, this was written quickly and effortlessly. He added: "Lyrically it's a lament about the perfect woman in my mind's eye being anomalous - she probably doesn't exist - and trying to transcend that strange emotion that a lot of people go through - women have about men and men have about women - whatever - that they have this idea in their mind about their perfect mate when what they should be doing is trying to experience a human being for what they are and not what they think they should be."
  • The song's title is a play on the word "anomaly," which means "deviation from the rule."
