Songfacts®:

  • This standard was written by Irving Berlin in 1924 and published by his eponymous New York company. The original sheet music bears a colour drawing of a palm tree and setting sun, implying a desert island, just in case the title left any doubt as to the subject of the song.
  • Although this down tempo number is hardly one of his more inspired works, it has been quite widely recorded. It was sung by Bing Crosby in the 1942 film Holiday Inn and by Marilyn Monroe in the 1954 Berlin-inspired musical There's No Business Like Show Business. Monroe's voice from this performance of the song - though not from the song itself - was sampled by Golden Earring for "Vanilla Queen", the title track of their 1973 Moontan album. >>>
