Songfacts®:

  • Irving Berlin wrote this song while stationed at Camp Upton, Yaphank in New York after being called up for service in the Great War (as it then was). "We're On Our Way To France" was the final song in the 1918 review Yip-Yip-Yaphank. Berlin never saw active service in the first great conflict of the Twentieth Century, and by the time war broke out in Europe in 1939, he was too old, although he was again recruited to do what he did best, and the song was dusted down for the 1943 Broadway musical and film This Is The Army. In the film version it was sung by George Murphy as Jerry Jones, with chorus. >>
