Songfacts®:

  • Released as the fourth and final single from 2014 Forest Hills Drive, "Love Yourz" only reached #41 on Billboard's US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, but it has since become a fan favorite and a J. Cole concert staple.
  • The song finds Cole reflecting on the dreams he used to chase when he was growing up in a tough environment. Now that the rapper is rich and successful, he's finding it's not as fulfilling as he'd hoped.

    For what's money without happiness?
Or hard times without the people you love?

Cole said: "As I really started to take a closer look at all that s--t we want, and all the s--t we need that makes us happy, I started to see for my, with my own eyes."
  • The piano-driven beat was supplied by Illmind. Both the pianos and string section came from a sound kit made by assistant producers Cardiak and CritaCal.

"My job as a producer is to extract that emotion and make it into reality. That's why it's so important to collaborate," Illmind explained to Genius. "I really wanted the melody to sort of be the star of the show. Everything about it was just so emotional and so deep. And so, just to add on to the human element, we have this string section."
