Songfacts®:

  • The first single by rapper J. Cole, off his sophomore album, Born Sinner, is a drum-driven track, which finds him bringing a new attitude to his rap game. "Two chances, slow dance with the devil, bitch. Overcome any circumstances, we hella rich," he spits on the chorus regarding how he made it against the odds despite his carelessness as a youngster.
  • The hard-hitting track finds Cole outlining his views on the state of his country. The Roc Nation rapper told Billboard magazine that its release as a single was a risk but necessary for the progression of his career. "We have a responsibility and a certain power that comes with making the music and playing the music, and that comes with a responsibility to keep things fresh, and not to fall into the mold of what's traditional," he said. "I have singles that fall into that [mold], but if I can use my power in some kind of way, I'm going to try to use it to shift culture just a little bit."
  • The song samples "Flightline," a track from Rue Royale's 2011 album, Guide To an Escape.
