Songfacts®:

  • This song about facing down fears is the title track of London based singer-songwriter Jack Peñate's second album.
  • Despite its commercial success, Peñate was unhappy with his debut release, Matinée, as he felt it didn't truly represent him. For Everything is New, he took on board Kate Bush's drum-driven songwriting and the Womack and Womack 1988 single "Teardrops." He explained to AOL that he used the latter as a blueprint: "That became a big reference point for me. That's a song that seemed to encapsulate some of my favorite ideas about music, which is complete melancholy with joy in it, and really all about atmosphere." As a result Everything is New incorporates decidedly more booming bass and drums than its predecessor. Said Peñate: "I had this idea that if I could dance to this record, then I was doing the right thing."
