Songfacts®:

  • In 2018, Bob Dylan launched his own brand of whiskey called Heaven's Door. This song is about a guy who drinks that whiskey in an effort to glean inspiration - he wants to write a song like Dylan.
  • Jack Tempchin wrote this song with the Nashville-based singer-songwriter Gary Nicholson. "We were thinking that somebody needs to write some Bob Dylan songs to help change the world," Tempchin told Songfacts. "We're in a lot of trouble right now - maybe if I drink this whiskey, I can write a Bob Dylan song."

Tempchin is best known for his association with the Eagles, especially Glenn Frey. He wrote their songs "Peaceful Easy Feeling" and "Already Gone," then worked on every Glenn Frey solo album. Some of the songs he wrote with Frey include "You Belong To The City" and "Sexy Girl."
  • In 2022, Tempchin started performing this song with the band Mrs. Henry. They first teamed up with Tempchin participated in one of Mrs. Henry's re-creations of The Band's Last Waltz concert. "When it was over, I wrote them an email," Tempchin explained. "I said, 'Look, I'm not Bob Dylan, and you're not The Band, but maybe we should get together and make some music.' And they went, 'OK.' So it was really cool."
