Songfacts®:

  • A Hypermisophoniac is someone who suffers badly from Misophonia, a condition where specific sounds such as chewing, yawning, whispering or popping gum can trigger aggression toward the origin of the noise. Jack White told Rolling Stone that he developed an interest in the disorder, which inspired him to create this song out of annoying sounds (including the sound of his son's fidget cube toy).

"There are these people who have a hatred of sound, and certain sounds drive them to tears," White said. "[I] thought, 'What if we took annoying sounds with a recording, annoying musical sounds, and tried to make something beautiful out of them?'"
