Songfacts®:

  • This brooding Lazaretto track finds a sensitive White cautious about committing to a relationship having been previously burnt.
  • White used two live bands for the recording of Lazaretto, the all-male Buzzards and the all-female Peacocks. This song features both playing simultaneously in separate rooms at Third Man Studios. Three major edits were made using Pro Tools with takes of the two different bands playing at three different times. White explained to Sight and Sound: "We edited the tape to punch the male band over the female band in the chorus, with all eight tracks, and this was a very dangerous move, but it turned out amazing."

  • White is known for his love of analogue but is not averse to using modern technology when it suits him. Lazaretto was recorded to eight–track analogue tape, but he had no issues using Pro Tools when necessary. He noted to Sight and Sound: "I have never recorded to Pro Tools or mixed in Pro Tools, but it is great for doing edits that you can't do with analogue tape."
  • Directed by Robert Hales (Miley Cyrus' "Can't Be Tamed," Avril Lavigne's "Here's To Never Growing Up"), the video was according to White, "conceptualized, produced and shot within a 24-hour period."

The visual was filmed during a six-hour shoot at the Cruise Room at the Oxford Hotel in Denver and it stars musician-photographer Scout Pare-Phillips as well as several members of White's Third Man Records family.
