Songfacts®:

  • Not to be confused with any song of the same or similar name, this is a genuine duet for lovers composed by the husband and written by the wife.

Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent married in 1967; he was a divorcee with two daughters. "The Two Of Us" was released on the Pye label backed by "I'll Be With You" a few hours before their wedding at Kensington, London, in grand style. Guests included singer Adam Faith and DJ Alan Freeman.

In spite of the big band sound and grand production, these "two of us" were not "always traveling on" or "the cat and the cream"; they were separated in 1995 and divorced in 2002. She remarried in November 2005 and remained with her second husband until her death in March 2015 at age 74. Tony Hatch married for a third time, and shortly after her death it was revealed that he was banned from attending his second wife's funeral by her second husband, apparently in a long-running dispute over song rights. >>>
