Songfacts®:

  • "Angel of My Dreams" marks Jade's debut as a solo artist after Little Mix embarked on their hiatus. This song dives into her turbulent love-hate relationship with the pop industry, which she's navigated since Little Mix burst onto the scene in 2011.
  • The song channels the classic theme of unrequited love, but with a twist. It uses this familiar format to reflect on Jade's own experiences in the music industry. The lyrics become a powerful metaphor, expressing the exploitation, broken promises, and manipulation she's faced, contrasted with her genuine passion for music.
  • Jade aims a jibe at media mogul Simon Cowell:

    You only care about money
Sellin' my soul to a psycho
    They say I'm so lucky
Better act like you're lucky, honey

The wordplay on "psycho" and "Syco" is a direct jab at Cowell's record label, which signed Jade and Little Mix in 2011. With Syco, the foursome went on to become one of the best-selling girl groups of all time, but they switched to RCA during the creation of their album LM5 in 2018 because Syco was no longer working with Little Mix's management company.
  • The Little Mix star co-wrote "Angel of My Dreams" in LA alongside Steph Jones (Sabrina Carpenter's "Nonsense" and "Espresso"), Pablo Bowman (Tiesto's "The Motto," Calvin Harris' "Miracle) and producer Mike Sabath (Meghan Trainor, Raye).
  • "Angel Of My Dreams" samples Sandie Shaw's 1967 Eurovision Song Contest-winning song "Puppet On A String." Bill Martin and Phil Coulter, the writers of "Puppet On a String," are also credited as songwriters because of the sample.
  • Jade told Beat she wanted "Angel Of My Dreams" to "feel like a relentless, huge, fat pop punch in your face."

She added: "I was in LA and feeling a bit lonely. And then someone called to say that the head of my label, the man who signed me, was leaving. I spiraled hard. I went to the studio thinking about how fickle the music industry is and thinking about how much I love this job but also how much I hate it, too.

I explained the concept to Mike Sabath, where it's this kind of love-hate with the industry but making it sound like it's a relationship. Originally, it was supposed to sound more like a loving relationship that was toxic, but then I thought, 'No, let's let them have it; let's tell them what it's about in the verses.'"
  • So why did Jade choose this song as her debut solo single? "Obviously I was obsessed with Little Mix my girls, my family, but I think, there's something liberating about doing your own thing," she told BBC Radio 1's Jack Saunders. "This music is obviously very much me. I wanted to make a statement. I didn't want to play it safe for this first song. The concept is about my kind of love hate relationship with the music industry. So I've got a lot to say about that. Sort of to me this is the perfect launch into like the Jade world."
  • Directed by Aube Perrie (Megan Thee Stallion, Harry Styles), the music video for "Angel of My Dreams" takes inspiration from films like Showgirls and The Fifth Element while weaving in the psychological intensity of Black Swan.

The clip pays homage to Jade's roots in South Shields, with glimpses of her childhood and the X Factor audition that launched Little Mix. One scene depicts Jade as a young star striving for fame while a Cowell-like figure, complete with a cigar, manipulates the industry.

"The concept is sort of rags to riches, and it was emotional actually, because for one bit I'm busking and walking past a Sainsbury's Local," said Jade. "When I was 16, I would stand outside my local Sainsbury's and sing Christmas songs."
  • Adding a touch of whimsy, the "Angel of My Dreams" video features a cameo by Fontaines D.C. frontman Grian Chatten. Eagle-eyed fans will recognize his lime green tracksuit – the same one he wore in the band's visual for "Starburster." The scene is a playful bit of cross-promotion, as it also appeared in the Fontaines D.C. music clip, also directed by Perrie. It shows Chatten walking onto the set of Jade's shoot before walking into the dressing room and changing into an all-white outfit and angel wings.
  • Jade isn't the first former Syco artist to shade Simon Cowell in her lyrics. On Leona Lewis' 2015 single "Fire Under My Feet," the former UK X Factor winner sang of "drowning in quicksand" and complained that "no one's got my hand." It is believed she was alluding to the end of her time at Syco before she signed a new deal with Island Records in 2014.
  • Jade unveiled a haunting alternative take on "Angel Of My Dreams" with the release of the "S.A.D. (slow, angelic, dramatic)" version on August 9, 2024. The reworked song is accompanied by a music video where the former Little Mix singer embodies a disillusioned bride clad in a white corset and veil. Bathed in the spotlight, she delivers a live performance of the transformed track.
  • Jade wanted the song to reflect her journey from entering the music business to releasing her first solo material. "That's why the song feels so chaotic," she told Beat magazine. "The opening is like the music to that montage bit on The X Factor after you've won, and you're just catapulted into the industry."
  • "Angel of My Dreams" originally had a powerhouse vocal, the kind of big, soaring delivery fans might expect from Jade's Little Mix days, but she later re-recorded it with a gentler touch. Speaking to Elle, she said making That's Showbiz Baby taught her she didn't always have to "over-sing."

"That's the thing I've learned with this record, especially coming out of Little Mix," she explained. "It doesn't always have to be an over-sing. I've enjoyed learning that about my voice."

She even laughed about how fans on TikTok poke fun at Little Mix' 2016 anthem "Power."

"I'll see people reference 'Power' and say, 'These girlies are out here like, AHHH,'" Jade joked. "Just doing the absolute most for three minutes and seeing who could do the biggest belt."
