Songfacts®:

  • Released as the appetizer to Jake Bugg's sixth album, A Modern Day Distraction, "All Kinds of People" kicks off with a jaunty little guitar riff and a kick drum, while Bugg implores us to do something almost unthinkable in today's climate: understand one another.

"We all have our struggles," Bugg reminds us. "In British culture, we don't really talk to anyone about that. You need to talk about these things with the people you love. We have to try and help each other, because there's not much help out there."
  • Bugg didn't pen this anthem of empathy alone. He had help from three members of the Metrophonic crew: Paul Barry, Mark Taylor, and Patrick Mascall. Founded by Taylor in 1997, Metrophonic have worked for artists like James Bay, Olly Murs, Enrique Iglesias and James Morrison.

Taylor, in particular, has contributed to a string of hit singles, including Cher's auto-tuned resurrection "Believe" and Enrique Iglesias' smoldering ballad "Hero," the latter with Barry.
  • Metrophonic's production on "All Kinds of People" is exactly what you'd expect: slick, shiny, and radio-friendly, with just enough grit to keep Bugg's rootsy credibility intact.
  • Directed by Michael Holyk, the song's music video was shot in Bugg's home city, Nottingham. It showcases different people living their lives.
  • Recorded at Metrophonic Studios in London, A Modern Day Distraction is an album where Bugg cranks up the volume and lays bare his frustrations about the inequalities he sees all around him.

"People might say 'What do you know?' or 'Just stick to music'," he said, preemptively batting away critics. "I've got a bit of money, but we all know the people this affects. I was just writing it because it was the way I felt. It pisses me off – especially in a country like ours where we have the means and funds to take care of the people suffering the most, but we choose not to."
