Songfacts®:

  • This is the lead single from Jake Bugg's On My One album. The LP title takes its name from a saying in the singer's Nottingham hometown. Instead of saying 'on my own,' they say 'on my one.' "In a lot of ways it sums up this record because it mainly has been me on my own," Bugg said. "I saw this as the logical next step in my development as a songwriter. It was a challenge but something I felt I had to do."
  • Jake Bugg's vocals on this track are borderline rapping. He told Q magazine: "Well, my mates back in Clifton (Nottingham), listen to grime and hip-hop, but if I can take some cool hip-hop elements but mix them with guitar as well, then I feel like it's still me."
  • The video was directed by Michael Holyk, who also shot the more upbeat clip for Bugg's 2012 single "Trouble Town."
  • The song is an ode to 2010s music, of which Bugg is not a fan. He told Billboard magazine: "I'm kind of annoyed with how bad contemporary music is and what they do to kind of mock it."
  • Jake Bugg explained the meaning of the hook to IHeartRadio: "That's a song that's about, I was kind of frustrated at how things sometimes are in this industry, and how everybody just wants to be liked and that's the reason for the chorus, 'Gimme the Love, Gimme the Love.'"
