Songfacts®:

  • The opening track and lead single from Hearts That Strain, "How Soon The Dawn" features The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach on guitar. Auerbach also contributes to the album tracks "Burn Alone" and "In The Event of My Demise." "It was really cool working with Dan," Bugg told The Sun. "I supported The Black Keys on an arena tour of America a few years ago. We met once or twice during the tour so it was great to go into the studio and write some tunes and have a laugh as well."
  • The musicians on Hearts That Strain include two of The Memphis Boys, keyboardist Bobby Wood and drummer Gene Chrisman, who have played on legendary records from the likes of Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin and Dionne Warwick. Describing the pair, Bugg said:

"They're old guys but they're amazing. It was ten to five and then that's it. They'd pack up and we'd done two or three tunes. It was a mad vibe being from England and meeting these absolute legends and then cutting some tracks with them."
