Songfacts®:

  • Although he was best known as a minstrel composer, James Bland didn't write only "coon songs." This march in 2/2 time is "Respectfully Dedicated To Frank H. Hart"; it was published in the 1946 collection The James A. Bland Album Of Outstanding Songs wherein it was arranged by Charles Haywood and copyrighted by the publisher Edward B. Marks. The song was written for Haverly's Colored Minstrels and published originally in 1881.
  • According to Bland's biographer John Jay Daly, "The Dandy Black Brigade" (or simply "Dandy Black Brigade") was a song and chorus that immortalized the memory of a Negro National Guard Regiment marching down Broadway. >>>
