Songfacts®:

  • "People say the meanest things," Blunt sings in the first line of this track, where he admits that constant criticism took a toll. Most of the vitriol came in reaction to "You're Beautiful," his 2005 his that was so successful, it caused a backlash among listeners who got sick of it. He makes reference to this when he sings:

    Would have said you're beautiful
But I've used that line before
  • In this song, Blunt tells the love of his life (presumably his wife, Sofia), that he can suffer the slings and arrows from critics, as long as he has her. He also cops to a "wandering eye," but explains that she has nothing to worry about, as those from his past relationships were "something lesser."
  • Blunt wrote this song with Ryan Tedder and his collaborator, Zach Skelton; Tedder and Skelton also produced the track. Blunt's original idea for the line, "I've been called a dick" was to bleep out "dick" so listeners could imagine their own put-downs.
  • This was the first single released from The Afterlove, Blunt's fifth album. The album took him two years to make, which is a long time for him. He whittled the track list down from 100 songs he wrote.
  • The video, directed by Vaughan Arnell, shows Blunt in a swanky club, where revelry surrounds him while he stays stoic - it was shot so he appears small compared to his surroundings. At the end of the video, he does take up with a lady. "The love interest at the end is the person with the biggest smile, and the biggest heart," he told Time. "Not the coolest, not the best looking, not the skinniest, nor the tallest, but the person with the biggest smile and the biggest heart."
