Songfacts®:

  • "Don't Wake Me Up," with vocals by Josh Grimmett of the house music group Goodboys, is about escapism and the quest to remain in a dreamlike state. Released in March 2025, James Hype described it as "the song I've been trying to write for almost 10 years."
  • In 2014, James Hype began making music daily, gradually developing his craft through remixes and singles. This tune is the realization of a sound and feeling he had been chasing throughout his journey as a producer. When he finally cracked the code in 2025, it took - rather anticlimactically - just a few days to create "Don't Wake Me Up."

"Unreal result after three days," he posted on social media.
  • The song is part nostalgia, part ambition. Hype wanted something more musical, something that nodded respectfully to the golden age of '90s house music while still slotting neatly into the sprawling festivals and cavernous clubs he now plays.

"The track is about how I see my life at the moment," he told Apple Music. "I'm doing the best I've ever done, be it in the studio, in the gym, in my shows, and it just feels like a dream I don't ever want to wake up from. I'm just a guy from the north of England, and I know there are plenty of people out there that can achieve the same heights with the same dedication and focus. I want this record to be the soundtrack to those people's successes."
  • After James Hype developed the initial idea, the song came together as a collective effort also involving Josh Grimmett, former Goodboys member Johannes Shore, Hurts singer Theo Hutchcraft, and Conor Blake (Meduza's "Piece of Your Heart," KSI's "Voices").
