Songfacts®:

  • Released as the first single from James Marriott's sophomore album, Don't Tell The Dog, "I Don't Want To Live Like This" is about being hopelessly in love - so much so that it borders on desperation. The song captures the gut-wrenching feeling of loving someone who doesn't always love you back in quite the same way.

"I Don't Want to Live Like This" is also laced with a deep sense of ennui. Marriott sings of depression, apathy, and a yearning for something – anything - to change.
  • Marriott penned the brooding anthem while in a relationship with Aria Tamagochi. The song's emotional turmoil likely stems from creative imagination, artistic angst, or a simple desire to resonate with listeners.
  • Marriott teamed up with his trusted writing partners Matt Gavin and Jono Suter to pen the song, along with guitarist Louis Salanson, bassist Samuel Horsley, and Finnish musicians Eeli Savolainen and Psylla. He also co-produced the track alongside Suter, Psylla, and Savolainen.
  • Fans got their first taste of "I Don't Want to Live Like This" when Marriott performed it live on December 2, 2024, at the Powerstation in Auckland, New Zealand. He released the song on January 30, 2025.
  • Don't Tell the Dog debuted at the top of the UK Albums chart for the week of June 20, 2025, becoming Marriott's first UK #1 album. It also topped the Official Vinyl Albums Chart and the Official Record Store Chart, outperforming established acts like Oasis and Sabrina Carpenter that week.
