Songfacts®:

  • James Morrison had a tough upbringing in the town of Reading west of London. This poignant song, which he wrote with Kish Mauve's Jim Elliott and Mima Stilwell, reflects on Morrison's absent, alcoholic father's constant refrain that it was "his demons" that made him drink.
  • Morrison told The Daily Mail that his own demon is a lack of self-esteem. "Because my childhood was impoverished I always felt I was this kid with no voice," he said. "Then, suddenly, I had a voice. A big voice. But overcoming my demons hasn't been easy. Writing songs is my way of conquering them."
