Songfacts®:

  • This is the opening track from The Awakening, the third album by the English singer-songwriter James Morrison. The song is one of several inspired by the death of his father and was co-written by the American songwriter Dan Wilson, whose other credits include co-penning Adele's hit single "Someone Like You" and Josh Groban's "Hidden Away."
  • Morrison recalled the writing of the song: "I was writing with Dan Wilson, and he asked me what I was feeling at the time. I told him that my dad had recently died and I was hoping he would come into my dreams, but he still hadn't.' And Dan said, 'I think you should tap into that,' and as soon as we had the title In My Dreams I just got a guitar and it all came out. Musically I wanted it to sound like 'up,' like Curtis Mayfield or Stevie Wonder. I wanted it to feel like you're in a dream when you're hearing it."
