Songfacts®:

  • Jamey Johnson recorded this track for Forever Words, a collaborative album consisting of songs created from a collection of Johnny Cash's found poetry. John Carter Cash, who produced the album, explained in a video how Johnson let emotion take the reins in his interpretation.

"There was a rule for this whole thing, it was only to follow the word. Not to say that the artist could individually perhaps change a word here or there, that was OK," he said, "I believe my dad would have been fine with that - but the message had to be unadulterated."
