Songfacts®:

  • This Auto-Tuned number, in which Foxx blames a girl's frisky behavior on alcohol, features T-Pain.
  • This samples The-Dream's 2008 hit single "I Luv Your Girl."
  • The song's music video features an A-list cast. Foxx explained to MTV News: "The video [by director] Hype Williams, we went vintage. Ron Howard, who's [won] an Oscar; Jake Gyllenhaal, Oscar-nominated; Forest Whitaker, Oscar winner; Samuel Jackson, Oscar-nominated; Quincy Jones, Oscar winner and Grammys beyond; Clarence Avant; Morris Chestnut; Tatiana Ali, Ced' the Entertainer; Tommy Davidson - the biggest video!"

Foxx added that he was inspired by the late Notorious B.I.G. to call on so many friends for the clip. He said: "We wanted to sort of relive the Biggie [experience]. Remember when Biggie did the 'One More Chance' remix video?' So, we relived that. But [we have] the most Oscar-nominated and Oscar winners in one video that you ever seen."
  • This was Foxx's first chart-topper as a lead artist on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs list. The actor/singer had previously led this tally in 2005 with "Slow Jamz," billed to Twista featuring Kanye West and Jamie Foxx, and later in the same year with "Gold Digger," by Kanye West featuring Jamie Foxx.
The song spent 14 weeks in total at the #1 position of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. It thus fell one week short of equaling the record held by Mary J. Blige's "Be Without You" for the most weeks in the chart's peak position during the Nielsen era.
  • This topped the Billboard Urban Mainstream chart for 12 consecutive weeks, beating the previous record on 11 weeks held by TLC's "No Scrubs" in 1999.
  • The song was co-written by Atlanta-based singer-songwriter Nate Walka. The idea came to Walka when he was on the phone to his grandmother. She was complaining about his uncle, who is fond of a tipple and blames alcohol when things go wrong. "That's when the idea of the song came to me," said Walka, "it was so obvious, it was a cool concept. I started googling to see if anyone had come up with a song about this, and didn't find anything, so came up with the hook and the rest just unfolded."
  • This 21st-century bar anthem won a number of awards including the 2009 Soul Train Music Award for Record of the Year and the Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals in 2010. Foxx, performed the song live at the latter ceremony along with T-Pain and guests Doug E. Fresh and Slash.
  • Foxx parodied his own song when he performed this as "Blame It on the Apple Juice" on The Jay Leno Show.
  • The song featured in the Blame It On The Alcohol episode of the second series of Glee, which saw the cast addressing the issue of underage drinking.
