Songfacts®:

  • The British singer-songwriter ponders the nature of his heart and concludes it still belongs to whomever he loves, promising "it's still yours." He explained how the song came together:

"The whole first verse of the song came about while I was in bed about to sleep, and it just kind of pecked away at me to write it down. I don't know where it came from. I have no idea, but I liked the opening line: 'This heart has been broken, this heart has been fixed. This heart it is open via Machiavellian tricks.' And I thought that was really clever [laughs]. So I was really impressed with myself, although I have no idea where it came from, so I can't really take any credit. I was quite proud of it as the song comes out. The producer, Will Hicks (Ed Sheeran, Lily Allen), really played around with the chorus and how the things sound. He kind of fought with me and won, because I wanted to do something else and he said, 'I think we should do this,' and I let him. I went his way and he was right. It shows what a good producer does and what a good producer he is."
  • About those "Machiavellian tricks" doing a number on Lawson's heart: Niccolo Machiavelli was an Italian Renaissance philosopher who outlined the tactics of deceitful politicians in his treatise Il Principe (The Prince), inspiring the term Machiavellian and its meaning "cunning" and "duplicity." So Lawson's heart was once coaxed open through deception, though it hasn't made him distrust the idea of love.
