Songfacts®:

  • To be on cloud 9 is a state of euphoria. The expression derives from terminology used by the US Weather Bureau. Clouds are divided into classes and each class into nine types. The ninth cloud is the cumulonimbus, which rises to 6.2 miles (10 km), the highest a cloud can be.
  • Jay Kay sings here about his elation from escaping a negative relationship;

    Only a fool could walk away from me this time
    I'm walking on air, and every cloud is cloud 9
    .

    Jay Kay commented, "Cloud 9 is a song that's written in the style that I hope people know us for and are familiar with. It's a song that if anyone that has been jilted and yet found love somewhere else will no doubt relate to."
  • The song was written and self- produced by Jay Kay and Jamiroquai keyboardist Matt Johnson.
  • The Charlie Lightening directed video finds Jay Kay racing a seductive beauty on a Spanish road. The girl is played by Agent Provocateur model Monica Cruz, the sister of famed actress Penelope. The clip is a homage to another one of Jamiroquai's visuals "Cosmic Girl," which also featured cars racing each other in Spain.
