Songfacts®:

  • Before recording 2017's Modern Kosmology, psych-folk singer-songwriter Jane Weaver spent time on the Welsh island of Anglesey to reflect and write her lyrics. The trip proved successful, so three years later she headed off to a coastal town in Brittany, France, to work on Flock. However, she arrived there in December 2019 when it was off season. "I thought I'd go and have a nice time, drink wine in the sunset, but I didn't realize everything would be so closed," Weaver told Uncut magazine. "It was completely dead. Really, it was awful. But it was perfect too."
  • The first track on Flock, the pensive "Heartlow," captures Weaver's feeling of loneliness in the near-abandoned coastal town.

I thought the bells would be ringing when I walked home
I thought the people would be singing; where did they go?

"'Heartlow' was about a period of being in a deep funk about things, and I was trying to write myself up," Weaver told Uncut. "In Brittany it was life imitating art - I was trying to write my way out of it."
  • Jane Weaver released her 11th album, Flock, on March 5, 2021 to positive reviews. It debuted at #24 in the UK albums chart, the first time Weaver had entered the top 40.
