Songfacts®:

  • This was written by Rodney Jerkins, who has worked on many R&B and pop hits, along with his longtime collaborator LaShawn Daniels, who has written many songs for R&B artist Brandy. Also getting a writing credit on the song are Dernst Emile, who is better known as D'Mile, and Tasleema Yasinan, who is a singer/songwriter/rapper from New York.
  • British director Saam Farahmand directed the video for "Feedback." This was the first time Jackson had worked with Farahmand, who in the past has directed videos for The New Young Pony Club ("Ice Cream"), and Klaxons ("Magick").
  • According to Jackson's record label's website, "'Feedback' is a different metaphor (referring to the metaphor, which the title track on the album utilizes) that also explores sexual tension. It's a provocative conversation that invites openness in an area where so many of us are closed off."
  • This was Jackson's highest-charting title on the Hot 100 since "Someone To Call My Lover" reached #3 in September 2001.
  • The Discipline album was another fresh start for Jackson. It was her debut with Island Def Jam records and a departure from longtime collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Although she enjoyed working with producer/songwriter Rodney Jerkins, she accused the label of dropping all efforts to promote the album after the release of this song. She worked with the label for 14 months before she left in September 2008.
