Songfacts®:

  • The lyrics to this song were written in the 1600s by the German hymnwriter Paul Gerhardt, and translated to English by John Wesley. Jars Of Clay gut a contemporary arrangement to the hymn.
  • Members of Jars Of Clay are Christian, but Redemption Songs was their first album of "Worship Songs," which are songs that praise God. The religious context of their previous work is much more subtle.

  • Jazzz from FrankfurtWhoever put the second comment on there (was that you, Carl?!?)- it´s not correct. They have contributed various worship songs to different projects before, such as "Exodus" and "City on a hill". It´s just that they never had done a whole own album of worship songs before.
