Songfacts®:

  • The first single by American R&B singer Jason Derülo, from his second studio album, Future History, samples Robin S's "Show Me Love" and features an interpolation of "Day-O(The Banana Boat Song)."
  • DeRulo explained the song's message to MTV News: "I wanted to write a song that people could escape their problems, their pain, their turmoil, and by doing a feel-good song, I'm doing just that. You don't have to write a song about saving the world to do just that. We created this new age party-smasher."
  • The Rich Lee directed video features DeRulo throwing a dance party. "I'm very hands on with everything that I do, and I wrote 'Don't Wanna Go Home,' and I wanted to write a video right after I finished doing the song 'cause I actually saw it [in my mind], what this video is about," he told MTV News. "Basically, [it's] not about going to the club, [it's about] never leaving the club."

He continued: "This one was very vivid for me. I wrote a treatment and Rich Lee took my treatment and expanded upon it. I'm through the roof. You'll see a lot: more dancing, a lot more sex appeal. We're taking it there."
  • This isn't the only 2011 hit to borrow from Harry Belafonte's calypso standard. Lil Wayne's "6 Foot 7 Foot also samples "Banana Boat (Day-O)."
  • DeRulo told MTV UK about his use of the Robin S sample. He explained: "I'm in love with that bassline, it's just really hypnotic and I just wanted to play around with it in the studio. I heard it a bunch of times in the club and I fell in love with it, like most people do." Derulo added: "It was just one of those things that happened to be magical. When I'm in the studio, I don't try to like pre-plan things, I just try to go with the flow."
  • The song was Derulo's second U.K. #1 single, following 2010's "In My Head."
  • DeRulo told MTV News that when coming up with the title for his sophomore album, he had no trouble thinking of the name, which he now has tattooed on his arm. "It represents where I've come from," he said. "It took a long time to get to where I am now. It's been a long journey, a fruitful journey, but it's been a long one, and now is the bridge between where I've come from and where I see myself going in the future. That's why it's called Future History."
  • Just fallen in love? It's likely you will be listening to this song as according to a Facebook report that went online just prior to 2012 Valentine's Day, "Don't Wanna" is the most-listened to love song by people who have recently met that significant other. The social networking service detailed the top songs their users listen to on Spotify the day they change their status to "In a relationship" - and this tune came out top, followed by Beyoncé's "Love On Top" with Lil Wayne's "How To Love" in third place.
  • The song featured in the Sims 3 video game. Derulo sung it in "Simlish," the language of the Sims.
