  • Jason Derulo explained the song's meaning to Time: "Sometimes, men don't understand women, and vice versa. Women don't understand men. And, maybe if we could trade hearts I could understand why you lie to me or why you're crying, or maybe you'd understand why I'm silent and why I can't stand to be around you. If we trade hearts, we could really understand how each other felt."
  • The song features a vocal contribution from pop songwriter Julia Michaels, who has co-penned hit tunes for the likes of Selena Gomez ("Good For You") and Justin Bieber ("Sorry"). It was the first time Michaels was credited as a featured artist rather than a songwriter.

Michaels recalled to Billboard magazine that she got a phone call from Jason Derulo, who was interested in a song she had written, but wanted to make it a duet. She went to Derulo's studio that night and recorded a demo, thinking he intended to give the part to another singer.

"Then, three days later, I'm in Mexico working with Selena Gomez and Justin, and I get an email saying Jason wanted me to do it," she said. "I remember running to the beach, screaming, 'I got my first feature with my name on it!'"
