Songfacts®:

  • The Cumberland Gap is a gorge through the Cumberland Mountains where Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee meet. Traditionally, a working class coal-mining area, Isbell paints a picture during this track of a poverty-stricken coal miner drinking away his troubles. "Maybe the Cumberland Gap just swallows you whole," he reflects.

"This song is about working class desperation, really," Isbell told Noisey. "It was written as a tribute to the children of the coal mining regions."
