Songfacts®:

  • This song was originally penned by Luc Reynaud of the Seattle music band Luc & the Lovingtons whilst assisting in the Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts. The song caught Jason Mraz's attention and inspired by its optimistic message of how music can uplift the human spirit, the singer-songwriter started performing it in his concerts. "I heard the song and immediately wanted to tell the story and immediately wanted to sing it and play it. The Freedom Song is a song of gratitude and it fits right in with everything I do." said Mraz.
  • Mraz recorded the tune for the opening track of Love Is a Four Letter Word and released it as a promotional single. It was the first time that he'd recorded a cover version for any of his albums.
