Songfacts®:

  • This funky house track is the second single released from Jax Jones and Martin Solveig's collaboration, Europa. They dropped the tune on February 21, 2020.
  • Jones recruited his fellow South Londoner Raye as the vocalist for the track. The two previously worked together on Jones' 2016 breakthrough single "You Don't Know Me."
  • The song is an ode to dancing at the club and sipping multiple shots of tequila. Jones explained in a press release that because he sets out to create happy music that people want to dance to, he tries to make his studio "a fun environment." One way he does this is to get his co-writers drinking Tequila rather than coffee, "to break the ice and loosen up the vibe." Jones and Raye did this when they came up with "You Don't Know Me."

This time the Tequila was really flowing, so Jones, Raye and Solveig ended up writing a song about the Mexican alcoholic drink. "For me this song represents good times with my friends," Jones said. "Not taking yourself too seriously, memorable nights out and tacos."
  • Other artists that have released songs inspired by tequila include The Champs, The Eagles, Joe Nichols, Kenny Chesney, Randy Rogers Band, Dan + Shay and Miranda Lambert.
  • While we on the subject of tequila, here are some fun facts about the Mexican distilled beverage from The Encyclopedia of Trivia.

After the Spaniards introduced distillation to Mexico in the 16th century, the Mexicans developed tequila, which is distilled from the agave plant.

The beverage is named after the town of Tequila near Guadalajara, where it is produced.

Tequila is made of blue agave Jalisco which is produced in select states in Mexico, including: Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas.

Without bats there would be no tequila. The agave plant is pollinated by bats.

It takes at least eight years for the Blue Agave plant to mature enough to be used to make tequila.

    Tequila contains about 40% alcohol.
  • When Capital Radio's Will Manning asked Raye in 2025 to rank her songs, this one came dead last. Raye was blunt: "'Tequila' sucks."

Though she laughed afterward, she made it clear she's moved far beyond that phase. "Different time," she shrugged. Still, she gave Jax Jones credit for helping her grow: "Jack, I love you... that was the start."
