Songfacts®:

  • The album American Gangster was inspired by the movie of the same name starring Denzel Washington as the notorious drug lord Frank Lucas. In this song, Jay-Z raps about his own past as a drug dealer, and how he hustled his way to the top.
  • The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo) produced this track. Pharrell also sings the hook, which is taken from En Vouge's "Hold On." >>>

  • "Blue Magic" is a potent form of heroin that Lucas sold. At the end of the video, directed by Hype Williams, there is a clip from American Gangster where Denzel Washington (as Frank Lucas), explains that he turned "Blue Magic" into a brand name. Jay-Z is big on this kind of marketing, as he created an empire based on various brands he created.
