Songfacts®:

  • Janette Anne Dimech, known professionally as Jeanette, is a singer and songwriter who specializes in Spanish sentimental ballads. Born in England but raised in Spain, she first found fame in the late 1960s as the soft-voiced lead singer of the folk-pop band Pic-Nic.

But Jeanette's true destiny wasn't teenage folk-pop. She found her calling in 1971 with "Soy Rebelde," a song that essentially rebranded her as the patron saint of wistful romantic balladry. Written by Manuel Alejandro - Spain's master of heart-wrenching melodies - it became an anthem of quiet defiance, ensuring Jeanette a place in the hearts (and heartbreaks) of listeners across the Spanish-speaking world.

A decade later, Jeanette released Corazón de poeta, an album composed, arranged, and conducted by Alejandro. Jeanette later recalled how he would sit at the piano, unveiling each piece like a jeweler revealing a collection of rare gems. She loved them all. So did the public. The album sold millions and spawned multiple hits, including "El Muchacho de los Ojos Tristes" (The Boy with Sad Eyes).
  • "El Muchacho de los Ojos Tristes" is a chanson-tinged ballad about a lonely, melancholy man in need of love. Jeanette sings about his sad eyes and her desire to see him again and make him feel better.
  • In the accompanying music video, Jeanette performs the song alone on a television stage, swaying gently in a sequined purple dress and cowboy boots.
  • Since its release, "El Muchacho De Los Ojos Tristes" has become one of Jeanette's signature songs. In 2012, readers of 20 Minutos ranked it among her 10 best tracks.
  • In 2025, Selena Gomez introduced the song to a new generation with "Ojos Tristes," a reimagining for her collaborative album with Benny Blanco, I Said I Love You First.
