Songfacts®:

  • Jeffrey Osborne's love is taking him to new heights in this joyful R&B ballad from his debut solo album. Formerly the lead singer and drummer of the soul group L.T.D., Osborne proved he could make it on his own when the single became a hit.
  • Osborne knew the song had hit potential but his producer wasn't convinced. The instrumental demo was a faster tempo and he didn't have the benefit of hearing Osborne's romantic lyrics. "I fought with George Duke over that," the singer told The New Orleans Advocate. "Probably my all-time favorite person in life was George Duke. I absolutely loved that guy. He produced most of my solo records. I brought the demo of 'On the Wings of Love' to him; it was just a piano player. He's like, 'I don't know, man. It's too fast. I don't know what you're going to say. Then I came in with the lyrics, and we slowed it down, and he was like, 'OK, I hear what you're hearing now.'"
  • This also peaked at #13 on the R&B chart and #7 on the Adult Contemporary chart in the US. Its highest entry was in Canada, where it was #1 Adult Contemporary.
  • In The Office episode "Grief Counseling" from season 3, Pam sings this at a bird funeral with backing from Dwight on the recorder. It was also used on the TV shows The Last Man On Earth ("The Spirit Of St. Lewis" - 2017) and Son Of Zorn ("The Quest For Craig" - 2017).
  • This was used in a 2019 commercial for Amazon Prime. In the ad, a man shops for furniture online and starts imagining how he can transform his home into an entertaining space.
